Booja-Booja are the makers of vegan and organic ice cream and melt-in-the-mouth chocolate truffles. Believing that scrumptious treats can be made from a few simple, organic ingredients and without animal products, their aim is to bring joy and deliciousness to all their customers.
Sharing our ethos that good health comes without the necessary extras and added nasties, what better brand was there for us to partner with to give our customers their yummy chocolate fix without compromising their health?
We caught up with their MD, Matt Gilding, to find out more about the story behind the brand, what their customers love about them, and their greatest achievements.
Where did the idea for Booja–Booja come from?
Booja-Booja started in our founder Colin’s kitchen in Norwich. He already loved chocolate truffles but wanted to enjoy some that were kind to the planet. He wanted to eat chocolate truffles that were dairy-free, vegan and organic. There was nothing like that available to buy, so he decided to start making his own. He was determined never to compromise on quality – they had to be just as delicious, if not more so, than the finest handmade chocolate truffles, but without the dairy and made from as few, natural organic ingredients as possible. That’s how Booja-Booja came to be. I joined the company a few years later, fell in love with the truffles immediately and haven’t looked back since!
What five words best describe your brand?
Delicious, innovative, delight, playful, pleasure.
What sets you apart from chocolate brands out there?
Our delicious products (chocolate truffles and ice creams) are, and always have been, at the heart of Booja-Booja. We are creators who sell what we create because we want as many people as possible to experience the joy of what we’ve made. We make our own rules and do things our own way to get the results we want. We create and innovate; we’re constantly tweaking, testing and adjusting our recipes and processes in the pursuit of perfection.
The aim of the business is not just to make a profit – it is to make the world a happier place. We do this by producing delicious confectionery that is made in a responsible way and is accessible to as many people as possible, be they vegan, vegetarian, gluten or dairy intolerant, or simply lovers of fine chocolates and quality ice cream. This approach guides our relationships too, with our suppliers, colleagues and customers; we cherish honesty and openness.
Why did you want to partner with Wellbeing Sisters?
We want to make the world a happier place, and we like working with people and companies who want that too. Wellbeing Sisters are champions of a natural, toxin-free lifestyle, and we love that you’re on a mission to make it easier for women to live healthier lives. Booja-Booja has been a pioneer of health-aware deliciousness for more than twenty years. We’re passionate about making incredibly delicious treats with just a handful of organic ingredients, no additives or other extras, so it feels like we’ve got lots in common.
What are your customers looking for when they shop with you?
We are lucky enough to have a very wide customer base, but we believe that what they all have in common is appreciating exquisite deliciousness, presented beautifully, that they can enjoy in the knowledge that it’s about as wholesome and healthy as chocolates and ice cream can be! Our customers know they can rely on Booja-Booja to make them smile, to give them a moment of pure joy. We sometimes talk about our products being ‘a love letter to your senses’ and that’s what our customers get.
Why should our customers make the switch to Booja–Booja?
We think that once your customers have tasted our chocolate truffles, they’ll be happy to make the switch! We’re offering them truly delicious chocolate treats handmade by our wonderful team here in Norfolk with natural, organic ingredients. Everything we make is not only organic and vegan; it’s all dairy-free, gluten-free and soya-free too. Like Wellbeing Sisters, we want to help people enjoy a more natural life that’s full of joy, smiles and moments of blissful yumminess.
What’s your greatest accomplishment to date?
To date, we’ve won 149 awards, and we’re proud of them all. However, awards voted for by our customers are probably the ones we cherish the most. Winning the Soil Association’s ‘Nation’s Favourite Organic Award’ in 2016 was huge for us because it meant that people had voted for us over and above so many other fabulous organic food brands.
We’ve just launched a new selection box, The Signature Collection, which contains four brand new chocolate truffle flavours, and we’re really delighted that this gorgeous box has already won a prestigious award within months of being launched. It won ‘Best New Vegan Product’ at the Natural & Organic Awards Europe 2021.
And it may sound cliché, but it’s true to say that the emails and letters (yes, we get actual letters!) we receive from customers telling us how much they love our products are what make us all smile and feel ‘glowy’ the most. After all, that’s why we do what we do – to touch people’s hearts.
If you hadn’t set up Booja–Booja, what do you think you’d be doing instead?
It’s hard to imagine life without Booja-Booja now – it’s a very special place, with very special people, that really gets into your heart. But I think whatever I did would involve delicious food because good, wholesome food is such a great way of spreading happiness. There’s nothing better than knowing that what you do is making people smile.
